Marathon Description:
It's almost New Years! What better way to ring in 2011 than by celebrating Nintendo's beloved mascot, Mario? We'll be running this Marathon between December 30th to January 2nd, making it our second New Years Marathon so far.
  • Super Mario Bros.
  • Super Mario Bros 2
  • Super Mario Bros 3
  • Super Mario Land
  • Super Mario Land 2: 6 Golden Coins
  • Super Mario World
  • Super Mario World 2: Yoshi's Island
  • Super Mario 64
  • Super Mario Sunshine
  • Super Mario Galaxy
  • New Super Mario Bros. Wii
  • Super Mario Galaxy 2
Between each console's set of games, we'll be playing a "buffer game" that isn't a main entry in the Mario series. These include various sports and party games, a couple of Mario "edutainment" titles and, of course, Hotel Mario on the Philips CDi (provided the damned thing works come Marathon time).

All the money raised will go to Free the Children, a charity that provides humanitarian aid to children in developing nations worldwide. If we raise $8,500 we can fund the construction of a school somewhere (we'll stick a poll up and let you guys choose where you want it). Check out a total list of what your donations go to here and help us build a school (or raise that goat army we're always talking about).

Why Super Mario Bros?
We just had a big Sonic the Hedgehog Marathon and I've played enough bad Sonic games to last a lifetime. We're in need of a palate cleanser and considering Nintendo has never put out a bad Mario game, I can't think of anything better.

Plus, 2011 marks the 30th anniversary of Mario's first appearence in the original Donkey Kong and the 25th anniversary of the release of Super Mario Bros. outside of Japan. That's worth celebrating, eh?

What's the criteria for completion?
We're done with Super Mario Bros. and Super Mario Bros. 3 when Bowser is defeated at the final stage. Super Mario Bros. 2 is complete once Wart is taken down at the end.

Super Mario Land is considered complete when Daisy is rescued (sorry, Peach) and Super Mario Land 2 is finished when Wario is defeated.

Super Mario World is finished when Bowser is beaten on the last stage (I'm beginning to notice a pattern) and Super Mario World 2 is over when Baby Bowser is destroyed at the end.

Super Mario 64, Super Mario Sunshine, Super Mario Galaxy (and Galaxy 2) and New Super Mario Bros. Wii are all finished when Bowser is defeated on the final stage.

What system will you play the games on?
Super Mario Bros. will be played on the Nintendo Wii Virtual Console and on the Game Boy Color through the Super Mario Bros. Deluxe port.

Super Mario Bros 2 will be on the Virtual Console and on the Super Mario Advance Game Boy Advance port.

Super Mario Bros 3 will be on the Virtual Console and the Super Mario Advance 4: Super Mario Bros. 3 (that's a mouthful) GBA port.

Super Mario Land and Super Mario Land 2 will be played via the Nintendo Game Boy Player on the GameCube.

Super Mario World will be played on the Virtual Console and Super Mario World 2 will be played on the SNES and Yoshi's Island: Super Mario Advance 3 GBA port.

Super Mario 64 will be played on the Nintendo 64. Super Mario Sunshine will be played on the GameCube.

Super Mario Galaxy, Galaxy 2 and New Super Mario Bros. Wii will all be played on the Nintendo Wii.

Is there going to be a raffle?
Yes! I am in the process of getting some ExtraLives.org T-shirts printed up to raffle off. We will be raffling five of these shirts during the Marathon and one shirt will be reserved for the highest donor, making a total of six shirts we're giving away. We also have a prize donated by a fan to be raffled off-- it's a limited edition prize sent out to Platinum Club Nintendo members. Here's a picture of it:

WIN ME! WIN MEEEEEEE!

As was the case with the previous Marathons, every $5 donation counts for one entry in the raffle. Each $5 entry will enter the donor in every raffle we have throughout the course of this Marathon.

Like the Pokethon and second Sonicthon, we will not be raffling off all of the items at once. Instead, we will raffle off a T-shirt approximately every 12 hours. Donate early and often for the best chances at winning!

You had a bunch of fanart last time-- will you accept more?
Sure! We love to get fanart and we hope you guys enjoy looking through it as much as we do.

For every piece of fanart you submit, we'll give you an entry into the raffle. However, the fanart has to be something a bit more than some scribbles on a white MS Paint background-- put a bit of effort into it!

Also, do me a HUGE favor and don't call the files "fanart.jpg." I get a LOT of files named like that and I have to go through and manually rename them. Including your name in the filename would be a great help in sorting out who made what!

I see this broadcast on Justin.tv too! What happened?
We're trying out a simulcast between Ustream and Justin.tv for this Marathon. There are a few features on Justin.tv I'd like to give a try and I just wanted the chance to get acquainted with the site in general-- who knows, maybe one day we'll switch?

I want to watch, but I'll be away. What do I do?!
Provided there are no unforeseen technical issues, we'll be recording the entire Marathon so you can re-watch it whenever you'd like!
